Number two son’s room is painted.  Caribbean Cool and Sandy Cove – even the names sound beachy!

Number one son’s fabric to finish the duvet is on the way.  Moda’s Basic Building Blocks.

I looked high and low online for this fabric.  It’s one of my favorites and Landon really likes it.  I finally ordered it from It’s A Stitch.  This store is on the other side of Houston from where I live.  As much as I would dearly love to visit it in person, with gas so high, it’s cheaper to ship it.  Isn’t that CRAZY!  One of two things need to happen . . . either gas prices need to take a chill which I HOPE they do, or they need to get a decent quilt store on my side of town.  The one over here has NOTHING designed since the 80’s.  Ok, maybe a little bit of an exaggeration, but not too much.

Noah has been watching while number one son’s room has been revamped.  As we put the color on the wall, he made comments like, “Wow!  I like that color!”  Rearranging furniture, “That looks really good!”  New light fixture, “I like that!”

Sometimes as number two son, he feels left out.  “Landon gets to do all the fun stuff.”  He’s taller so he can drive the go carts at Mountasia.  He’s older, so he can do paintball.  He’s in the youth group, so he can go to camp and do all the fun activities.  We try to do what we can to add flavor to his life too, but sometimes there are “unchangeables” that get in the way . . . like age, height, and birth order.

But the way his room looks is not an unchangeable.  We started working on his room yesterday.  We rearranged the furniture and got a stack of paint samples.  He wants a beachy feel to the room, so we got plenty of sands, blues, and turquoises.  This morning we sifted through them all, then Joel and Noah took a trip to Lowe’s.

Being parents to more than one child brings different challenges, but we are up to the challenge.

Charlie Chan influenced this post.  We checked this one out at the library.

Some of the simplest changes can make profound differences.  For example, take old builder-grade cheap light fixtures.  Dirty too, I might add.  They could almost be termed  “non-light” because of the lack of light they give to a room.  This was taken with the blinds open and the sun shining in.  Sad, sad, sad!

Then a switch of the breaker and a little bit of elbow grease later . . .

Light fixtures are really not that hard to change out.  I guess I can add “electrician” to my resume.

I had very good company while putting the furniture together.  We (the three of us) got it done!  Only one moment of confusion over directions, but other than that it all went together smoothly.

Now to borrow a drill to hang shelves above this lovely workstation.  (Yeah, we’re not power tool people.  That’s what parents are for!)

Ikea furniture means get a good breakfast, find the screwdriver, summon up your patience, and get to work!

White walls were painted Thursday!  Actually dirty white walls is more like it.

The first roll of a new paint color.  What a luscious color of gray!

Three walls “Wet Pavement”.

Fourth wall . . . “Filoli Morning Glory”.

We used Valspar paint from Lowe’s.  The consistency is like pudding; it covers well and doesn’t drip!  We played around with colors before buying them.  Landon was a little worried when I started trimming out the blue, but is thrilled now that it’s all done.  I can’t count the number of times he has thanked me for helping him.  What a great guy he is!

What do we do with all this extra time we have now?  Fill it up.  Seriously, I thought this week would be a kind of a stay-at-home-and-do-nothing week, but we are managing to fill up every single day.  Of course it’s with fun things, so that’s ok!

First fun thing is to get going on Landon’s room.  Since March we have taken a trip to Ikea to scope out possible furnishings, made a budget, and he made final decisions on what he could afford (which was quite a lot).  We looked online and ordered fabric to make a duvet cover.  All of this was progress you couln’t actually see.  Just the planning stages.  But today that changed.

We have fabric to show for our effort!

I just love the colors he picked.  We will be using Lotta’s duvet pattern, but with a patchwork look.  Also, now that we have the actual colors for us to see, we will be taking a trip to Lowe’s to pick out paint.  Our goal is to paint the room Thursday.  Excitement is building!

This weekend was a whirlwind of activity – shower, party, family from out of town!  I’m glad it’s Monday.  Did I just say that?

It was a fun weekend but quite exhausting.  The new park was very nice, but PACKED, and parking was interesting.   The theme was butterflies, and my sister had the cutest idea of adding paper butterflies to a plain white paper lantern.  Is this not cute?

The birthday girl was precious!  She came equipped with a set of butterfly wings (which only stayed on for a little while – can’t play very well with wings sticking out) . . .

and a butterfly tatoo.  Gotta have that!

Flutter by little butterfly!

A few months ago, my mom asked me to help her decorate her mantel.  She was tired of what she had and wanted a new look.

My mom has a huge fireplace!  The thing is massive.  Needless to say, her mantel is very long.  It’s a great focal point in the living room, but decorating the mantel is not easy.  From the mantel to where the ceiling starts sloping up is only a few feet.  Not a lot of height to work with.  There is also another hang up . . . the living room is very dark.  They have dark wood paneling/brown brick and not very much light comes through the windows.

Keeping these two things in mind, we took a trip to Kirkland’s Home.  We decided we needed a mirror to reflect what light does come through the windows.  Also, some frames.  We got a big one with a copper metalic frame and a wide white mat for the focal point and another smaller one.  We also bought a small clock, just because we liked it.  She had candlesticks already and a small flower arrangement.

When we got back, we played around with the arrangement of the pieces.  Oops!  The smaller frame was dropped.  The glass shattered and the frame broke in two pieces.  We glued the frame back together.  I had seen empty frames used on mantels, so we played with it for a while and decided the accidental drop was a good thing.

The only thing we needed now was artwork to go in the big frame.  I looked on Etsy.  I wanted a photograph with some red in it.  Do you know how many photographs with red in them are listed on Etsy?  I looked at them ALL!  It took me weeks, but I found one from this seller.

Perfect for her living room!
